The Dallas Chapter of OWL, Older Women's League, sponsored by Senior Citizens of Greater Dallas, is the voice for midlife and older women. OWL is a national grassroots advocacy organizational dedicated to winning economic, political and social equality for women age 40 and older.
National OWL has been working on behalf of older women since 1980 through testimony before Congress, bringing critical issues to the attention of the White House, and powerful public education campaigns. National OWL also publishes and distributes to its members an annual Mother's Day Report. Past reports include: Prescription Drugs, The Face of Medicare, Women Work & Pensions, and The Face of Caregiving.
The Dallas Chapter of OWL was formed in 1996 after Senior Citizens of Greater Dallas received a tremendous response to its initial organizational meeting which featured Liz Carpenter as keynote speaker. The Charter members voted to make nursing homes, employment, and image their top-ranking issues.
Since that first meeting, Dallas OWL has led the charge to improve the quality of life for mature women. Educational programs have included the issues of osteoporosis, financial security, and affordable housing.
OWL is a membership organization which actively advocates for midlife and mature women. Local members receive regular "action alerts," National OWL newsletters, as well as the Dallas Chapter OWL newsletter, A Word to the Wise.
